Port 5223 is used for SSL-encrypted XMPP client connections and historically by Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) for legacy device connections. Apple devices used this port to maintain persistent connections to Apple's push notification infrastructure. Modern APNs uses port 443, but this port remains in use for XMPP-over-SSL deployments.
