RFC 5340 Proposed Standard

OSPF for IPv6

R. Coltun, D. Ferguson, J. Moy, A. Lindem · 2008-07

Abstract

OSPFv3 adapts the OSPF link-state protocol to operate over IPv6 networks. It runs directly over IPv6 (protocol 89), uses link-local addresses for neighbor adjacency, and introduces new LSA types to carry IPv6 prefix and link information. RFC 5340 obsoletes RFC 2740.

Why This RFC Matters

OSPFv3 is the standard IGP for IPv6-only and dual-stack networks, mirroring the role OSPFv2 plays for IPv4. Its separation of topology information from addressing information (via different LSA types) makes the protocol more modular. Most modern router operating systems support OSPFv3 natively, and it is widely deployed in carrier IPv6 cores. Extensions allow OSPFv3 to carry both IPv4 and IPv6 address families over a single protocol instance.
