TCP/UDP — DNS
Port Overview
What is Port 1512?
Port 1512 is used by Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), Microsoft's implementation of NetBIOS Name Service (NBNS). WINS resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses in older Windows networks. While largely replaced by DNS, it still appears in legacy Windows enterprise environments.
Security Considerations
Port 1512 (WINS) is classified as medium risk. While this service is commonly exposed, consider using encrypted alternatives where available.
Recommendation: Keep the service updated. Monitor logs for unusual activity.
