UDP — System & Infrastructure
Port Overview
What is Port 4789?
Port 4789 is the standard IANA-assigned port for VXLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN), a network virtualization protocol used extensively in cloud computing and software-defined networking. VXLAN encapsulates Layer 2 Ethernet frames within UDP packets to extend virtual networks across Layer 3 boundaries. It is heavily used by Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenStack for container and VM networking.
Security Considerations
Port 4789 (VXLAN) is classified as medium risk. While this service is commonly exposed, consider using encrypted alternatives where available.
Recommendation: Keep the service updated. Monitor logs for unusual activity.
