TCP — Remote Access
Port Overview
What is Port 5500?
Port 5500 is used for reverse VNC (Virtual Network Computing) connections, where the remote desktop server initiates the connection to the viewer. This reverse connection mode is used to traverse firewalls and NAT when the viewer cannot directly connect to the server. Standard VNC uses port 5900, while port 5500 is the listener for incoming reverse connections.
Security Considerations
Port 5500 (VNC Remote Desktop (Reverse)) is classified as high risk. This port is a common target for automated scanning and brute-force attacks. If you must expose it, restrict access to known IP addresses.
Recommendation: Use firewall rules to whitelist trusted IPs. Enable rate limiting and intrusion detection.
