Port Overview
What is Port 65?
TACACS-DS (Terminal Access Controller Access Control System - Database Service) is a predecessor variant of TACACS used for centralized authentication of terminal access. It was used in early ARPANET environments to control access to network devices. It has been fully superseded by TACACS+ (port 49) and RADIUS.
Security Considerations
Port 65 (TACACS-DS) is classified as medium risk. While this service is commonly exposed, consider using encrypted alternatives where available.
Recommendation: Keep the service updated. Monitor logs for unusual activity.
