Port Overview
What is Port 8086?
Port 8086 is the default HTTP API port for InfluxDB, a popular open-source time series database designed for metrics, events, and analytics. The InfluxDB HTTP API accepts write and query requests for time-stamped data from monitoring agents, IoT devices, and applications. Unauthenticated InfluxDB instances have been widely exploited for data theft and cryptomining.
Security Considerations
Port 8086 (InfluxDB HTTP API) is classified as critical risk. This port should not be exposed to the public internet. The service transmits data without encryption, making it vulnerable to eavesdropping, credential theft, and man-in-the-middle attacks.
Recommendation: Block this port at the firewall. Use encrypted alternatives (SSH, SFTP, HTTPS) instead.
