Port Overview
What is Port 8983?
Port 8983 is the default HTTP port for Apache Solr, an open-source enterprise search platform built on Apache Lucene. Applications use Solr's REST API on this port to index documents and perform full-text searches. Many Solr data breaches have occurred from publicly exposed instances without authentication, leading to data theft and cryptomining attacks.
Security Considerations
Port 8983 (Apache Solr) is classified as critical risk. This port should not be exposed to the public internet. The service transmits data without encryption, making it vulnerable to eavesdropping, credential theft, and man-in-the-middle attacks.
Recommendation: Block this port at the firewall. Use encrypted alternatives (SSH, SFTP, HTTPS) instead.
