UDP — Security & VPN
Port Overview
What is Port 1701?
Port 1701 is the standard port for Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), used to create VPN tunnels. L2TP itself provides no encryption and is typically combined with IPSec to form L2TP/IPSec VPN connections. It is built into Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android for VPN connectivity.
Security Considerations
Port 1701 (L2TP) is classified as low risk. This service uses encryption or has a minimal attack surface, making it relatively safe to expose.
Recommendation: Standard security practices apply. Keep software updated and monitor access.
