Abstract
RFC 8415 is the current definitive specification for DHCPv6, consolidating and updating RFC 3315 along with numerous related RFCs covering prefix delegation, rapid commit, and other extensions. It defines the full DHCPv6 message exchange process, option formats, and server/client/relay agent behavior for stateful IPv6 address and prefix configuration.
Why This RFC Matters
RFC 8415 represents the maturation of DHCPv6 into a comprehensive, unified specification after 15 years of operational experience and incremental extensions. By consolidating RFC 3315 and many extension RFCs into a single authoritative document, it simplified implementation and removed ambiguities that had caused interoperability issues. As IPv6 deployment accelerates globally, DHCPv6 and RFC 8415 become increasingly important for ISPs and enterprises that require stateful address management, prefix delegation to customer premises equipment, and centralized DNS server distribution in IPv6 networks.
